Bearbaiting, alternatively bullbaiting, the setting of dogs on a bear or a bull chained to a stake the neck or leg. Popular from the 12th to the 19th century, when they were banned as inhumane, these spectacles were usually staged at theatre-like arenas known as bear gardens. In fact, many of the same Londoners who flocked to Shakespeare s Globe Theatre were also patrons of the near Bear Gardens, where bears, dogs, bulls, chimps and other creatures routinely fought to the death in front of roaring crowds. Along with the theater, animal blood sports Bear-baiting is a blood sport involving the worrying or tormenting (baiting) of bears. It may involve pitting a bear against another animal. Thespians of old playing the Globe Theatre would have walked past the Bankside bear-baiting ring on their way in.
